He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He fought in the First World War, where he became a POW.1 He gained the rank of officer in the Royal Flying Corps.1 He was with the Diplomatic Service between 1921 and 1926.1 He was admitted to the Royal Company of Archers in 1927.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Berwickshire in 1931.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Berwick and Haddington between 1931 and 1945.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Glasgow University, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Berwickshire in 1933.1 He held the office of Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Scotland between 1939 and 1940.1 He was awarded the Chevalier, Legion of Honour in 1946.1 He was president of the Scottish Union Association.1 He was created 1st Baronet McEwen, of Marchmont, co.
