Niall MacDermot was born on 10 September 1916 at Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland.1,2 He was the son of Major Henry Blake MacDermot and Gladys Lowenadler.3 He married, firstly, Violet Denise Maxwell, daughter of Lt.-Col. Denis Wellesley Maxwell and Georgina Constance Agnew, on 23 February 1940.1 He and Violet Denise Maxwell were divorced in 1966.1 He married, secondly, Ludmilla Benvenuto on 6 August 1966.1 He died on 22 February 1996 at age 79.1,2
He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.1 He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Intelligence Corps.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1945.1 He was admitted to Inner Temple Bench 1970 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Labour) for North Lewisham between 1957 and 1959.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Labour) for North Derby between 1962 and 1970.1 He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) in 1963.1 He held the office of Recorder of Newark between 1963 and 1964.1 He held the office of Minister of State, Planning and Land between 1967 and 1968.1 He was Secretary-General of the International Commission for Jurists between 1970 and 1990.1 He held the office of Recorder of the Crown Court in 1972.1 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1990.1
