He was commissioned in 1821 with the rank of officer, in the service of the Bengal Artillery.1 He fought in the Burma Campaign.1 He was British Resident of Nepal in 1843.1 He fought in the Kabul Campaign.1 He fought in the Sutlej Campaign.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1846.1 He was British Resident of Lahore in 1846.1 He wrote the book The Adventures of an Officer in Runjeet Singh’s Service.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1846.1 He was Governor-General’s Agent to the North-West Frontier.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1848.1 He was Chief Commissioner of Government of Punjab in 1849, on its annexation.1 He was Governor-General’s Agent of Rajputana in 1853.1 He fought in the Indian Mutiny in 1857, where he organised the defence of Lucknow.1 He was Chief Commissioner of Oudh in 1857.1
