Sir Redvers Henry Buller, V.C. was born in 1839 at Downes, Crediton, Devon, EnglandG.2 He was the son of James Wentworth Buller and Charlotte Juliana Jane Howard.2 He married Lady Audrey Jane Charlotte Townshend, daughter of Rear-Admiral John Townshend, 4th Marquess Townshend of Raynham and Elizabeth Jane Stuart, on 10 August 1882.3 He died on 2 June 1908 at Crediton, Devon, EnglandG.4
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.2 He was commissioned in 1858, in the service of the Army.2 He fought in the Zulu War in 1879.5 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.) on 17 June 1879, for his actions on 28 March 1879. “During the retreat from Hlobane, he saved the lives of two officers (Captain D’Arcy and Lieutenant Everitt) and a trooper of the Frontier Light Horse when their horses had been shot or assegaied under them. Rallying his men, he rode time and time again at the Zulus, under heavy attack fron gun and spear.”5 He fought in the Boer War.5 He was Commander-in-chief of the British Forces in the Boer War, where he raised the siege of Ladysmith between 1899 and 1900.3 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.)2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.)2
