Wigtown [N.S., 1694] on 22 June 1841.1 He held the office of a Lord of Treasury.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Wigtownshire.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Wigtownshire.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Wigtown Burghs between 1857 and 1865.1 He was Keeper of the Privy Seal for the Prince of Wales between 1859 and 1865.1 He was a member of the Council of the Duchy of Cornwall between 1863 and 1865.1 He was Keeper of the Great Seal of the Prince of Wales for Scotland between 1863 and 1865.1 He held the office of Comptroller-General of the Royal Exchequer and Auditor-General between 1867 and 1888.1
