Morrogh O’Brien, 1st Earl of Inchiquin1 
Morrogh O’Brien, 1st Earl of Inchiquin also went by the nick-name of ‘An tothaine’ (or in English, The Incendiary.)2 He succeeded as the 6th Baron of Inchiquin [I., 1543] on 29 December 1624.2 In 1642 he defeated the forces of the 1641 Uprising at Lisacarrol and other encounters.2 He held the office of Vice-President of Munster in 1642.2 In 1644 he supported Parliament in Civil War but then switched to the Royalists in 1648, hence his step up in the peerage.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in the French forces.2 He held the office of Viceroy of Catalonia, appointed by King Louis XIII.2 Before 1654 he turned Roman Catholic.2 In 1654 he lived abroad during the Interregnum.2 He was created 1st Earl of Inchiquin [Ireland] on 21 October 1654.2 He was created 1st Baron O’Brien of Burren, co. Clare [Ireland] on 21 October 1654.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland]2

He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in January 1670/71.1 He held the office of Captain-General of Tangier between 1674 and 1680.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron O’Brien of Burren, co. Clare [I., 1634] on 9 September 1674.1 He succeeded as the 7th Baron of Inchiquin [I., 1543] on 9 September 1674.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Inchiquin [I., 1634] on 9 September 1674.1 He was Colonel of the 2nd (Tangier) Foot between 1675 and 1680.1 In May 1689 he was attainted in absentia by King James II’s Irish Parliament.1 He held the office of Vice-Admiral of surrounding waters of Jamaica between 1690 and 1692.1 He held the office of Governor of Jamaica between 1690 and 1692.1
