He was admitted to Lincoln Inn in 1837 entitled to practise as a barrister.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Glamorgan in 1847.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Glamorgan in 1847.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Merthyr Tydvil between 1852 and 1868.1 He held the office of Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department between 1862 and 1864.1 He was Vice-President of the Council on Education in 1864.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 26 April 1864.1 He held the office of Secretary of State for the Home Department between 1868 and 1873.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Renfrewshire between 1869 and 1873.1 He was President of the Council on Education between August 1873 and February 1874.1 He was created 1st Baron Aberdare of Duffryn, co. Glamorgan [U.K.] on 23 August 1873.1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 20 January 1876.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Laws (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1880.1 He held the office of President of the Royal Geographic Society between 1880 and 1886.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) on 7 January 1885.1
Gibbs describes Henry as “an amiable man of fine presence and popular in society” and states that “he was an industrious, but not a gifted nor a successful, politian. He was one of the few Peers who supported Gladstone when that Minister gave way to the Irish demand for Home Rule.”2 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.3
