He acquired lands in Fifeshire, Forfarshire, Galloway and Lothian.1 He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1539.1 He held the office of Clerk Registrar in 1554, and was temporarily dismissed for implication in the murder of Rizzio.1 He held the office of a Lord of Session in 1554.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1561.1 He fought in the Battle of Langside in 1568, against Queen Mary of Scots.1 He held the office of Scottish Ambassador to England between 1570 and 1572.1 He held the office of Lord Provost of Edinburgh in October 1570.1 He lived at Rankeillour, Fife, ScotlandG.1
