He was given the name of Harry Calvert at birth.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Calvert, of Claydon House, co. Bucks [U.K., 1818] on 3 September 1826.1 On 9 February 1827 his name was legally changed to Harry Verney by Royal Licence.1 He gained the rank of Major in the 1st Grenadier Guards.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Buckingham between 1832 and 1841.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Bedford between 1847 and 1852.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) Lt.-Col. Eric Charles Twelves Wilson, V.C.1 
He fought in the Second World War.4 He gained the rank of Acting Captain in the East Surrey Regiment, attached to the Somaliland Camel Corps.4 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.) on 14 October 1940 posthumously, although in fact he survived and was taken prisoner by the Italians, for his actions on 11-15 August 1940.4
