John Selwyn Gummer, Baron Deben was born on 26 November 1939.1 He is the son of Rev. Canon Selwyn Gummer and Margaret Sybille Vera Mason.1 He married Penelope Jane Gardner, daughter of John P. Gardner, in 1977.1
He was educated at King’s School, Rochester, Kent, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Selwyn College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG.1 He was editor of Business Publications between 1962 and 1964.1 He was editor-in-chief of Max Parrish & Oldbourne Press between 1964 and 1966.1 He wrote the book When the Coloured People Come, published 1966.1 He was a director of Shandwick Publishing between 1966 and 1981.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)
