John Dalrymple, 2nd Earl of Stair

John Dalrymple, 2nd Earl of Stair was born in 1673.1 He was the son of John Dalrymple, 1st Earl of Stair and Elizabeth Dundas.2 He married Lady Eleanor Campbell, daughter of James Campbell, 2nd Earl of Loudoun and Lady Margaret Montgomerie, in 1714.3 He died on 9 May 1747, without issue.3
In 1707 he surrendered all of his honours to the Crown and obtained a new charter containing, in default of male issue, a reversionary clause in favour of any one of the male descendants of the 1st Viscount he cared to name.3 He succeeded as the 3rd Lord Glenluce and Stranraer [S., 1690] on 8 January 1707.2 He succeeded as the 3rd Baronet Dalrymple, of Stair [N.S., 1664] on 8 January 1707.2 He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount Dalrymple [S., 1703] on 8 January 1707.2 He succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Stair [S., 1703] on 8 January 1707.2 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount of Stair [S., 1690] on 8 January 1707.2 He succeeded as the 2nd Lord Newliston, Glenluce and Stranraer [S., 1703] on 8 January 1707.2 He fought in the Battle of Oudenarde in 1708, where he commanded a Brigade.3 He was appointed Representative Peer [Scotland] in 1707/8.3 He was Commander of the forces on the Rhine.3 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1710.3 He was appointed Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1715 and 1734.3 He fought in the Battle of Dettingen in 1743, 2ic to King George II.3 He was Commander-in-Chief of the South Britain.3 He was appointed Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1744 and 1747.3 He held the office of Ambassador Extraordinary to France, after the death of King Louis XIV.3 He gained the rank of Field Marshal.3 He nominated his nephew John Dalrymple as his heir to his honours.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
On 2 May 1748 the nomination of John as heir was contested by his nephew James Dalrymple, and the House of Lords decided in James’s favour.3

Her married name became Primrose.1 After her marriage, Lady Eleanor Campbell was styled as Viscountess Primrose on 30 November 1703. After her marriage, Lady Eleanor Campbell was styled as Countess of Stair in 1714. From 1714, her married name became Dalrymple.1
