Barbara Jekyll 
From 20 July 1911, her married name became McLaren. From 14 June 1922, her married name became Freyberg. She was a welfare worker, where she was mentioned in despatches in 1941 at Cairo, EgyptG.3 She was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1943.2 After her marriage, Barbara Jekyll was styled as Baroness Freyberg on 19 October 1951. She gained the title of Dame Freyberg in 1953. She was appointed Dame Grand Cross, Order of the British Empire (G.B.E.) in 1953.2 She was appointed Dame of Grace, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (D.St.J.)3

Lt.-Gen. Bernard Cyril Freyberg, 1st Baron Freyberg, V.C.1 
He was educated at Wellington College, Wellington, New ZealandG.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches six times and wounded nine times.2 He was awarded the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1915 with three bars (1918 twice and 1945.)2 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.) on 15 December 1916, for his actions on 13 November 1916.2 He was commander of the Infantry Brigade between 1917 and 1918.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1919.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by St. Andrew’s University, St. Andrews, Fife, ScotlandG, in 1922.1 He was commander of the 1st Battalion, Manchester Regiment between 1930 and 1931.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1934.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1936.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He was Commander-in-Chief of the New Zealand Forces between 1939 and 1945.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1942.2 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in 1942.2 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) by Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, in 1945.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1946.2 He held the office of Governor-General of New Zealand between 1946 and 1952.2 He was created 1st Baron Freyberg, of Wellington, New Zealand and of Munstead, co. Surrey [U.K.] on 19 October 1951.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)
