He was Commander of the Persian forces against Russia between 1804 and 1819.3 He was with the Honourable East India Company Service.3 He gained the rank of Major in the Court of the Shah of Persia.3 He was appointed Knight in 1832.3 He was Commander of the Persian forces against the rebel Zulli Sultan between 1834 and 1836.3 He was created 1st Baronet Bethune, of Kilconquhar [U.K.] on 7 March 1836.3 He succeeded as the 9th Lord Parbroath [S., 1633] on 14 March 1839, de jure.3 He succeeded as the 8th Viscount of Garnock [S., 1703] on 14 March 1839, de jure.3 He succeeded as the 8th Lord Kilbirny and Drumry [S., 1703] on 14 March 1839, de jure.3 He succeeded as the 9th Earl of Lindsay [S., 1633] on 14 March 1839, de jure.3 He succeeded as the 18th Lord Lindsay of the Byres [S., 1444] on 14 March 1839, de jure.3

He succeeded as the 19th Lord Lindsay of the Byres [S., 1444] on 19 February 1851.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Bethune, of Kilconquhar [U.K., 1836] on 19 February 1851.1 He succeeded as the 9th Lord Kilbirny and Drumry [S., 1703] on 19 February 1851.1 He succeeded as the 10th Earl of Lindsay [S., 1633] on 19 February 1851.1 He succeeded as the 10th Lord Parbroath [S., 1633] on 19 February 1851.1 He succeeded as the 9th Viscount of Garnock [S., 1703] on 19 February 1851.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 91st Highlanders.1 On 5 April 1878 his titles were recognised by the House of Lords.1 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland] between 1885 and 1894.1 On his death, his baronetcy became extinct.1
