James Duff, 4th Earl Fife1

James Duff, 4th Earl Fife was born on 6 October 1776.1 He was the son of Alexander Duff, 3rd Earl Fife and Mary Skene.1 He married Lady Maria Caroline Manners, daughter of John Manners and Louisa Tollemache, Countess of Dysart, on 9 September 1799 at St. James’ Church, Westminster, London, EnglandG.1 He died on 9 March 1857 at age 80, without issue.1
He was educated at Westminster School, Westminster, London, EnglandG.3 He was educated at Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.3 He fought in the Battle of Talavera in 1809, where he was wounded.3 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Braco of Kilbryde, co. Cavan [I., 1735] on 17 April 1811.3 He succeeded as the 4th Earl Fife [I., 1759] on 17 April 1811.3 He succeeded as the 4th Viscount MacDuff [I., 1759] on 17 April 1811.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Banffshire between 1813 and 1856.3 He gained the rank of Major-General in the Spanish Army, during the Peninsular Wars.3 He was awarded the Knight, Order of San Fernando of Spain.3 He was awarded the Order of Sword of Sweden.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Banffshire between 1818 and 1827.3 He held the office of Lord of the Bedchamber between 1819 and 1821.3 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.) in 1823.3 In 1827 he inherited the Skene and Carison estates through his mother.3 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1827.3 He held the office of Lord of the Bedchamber between 1827 and 1835.3 He was created 1st Baron Fife, co. Fife [U.K.] on 27 April 1827.3 On his death, his U.K. barony expired.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
