Jemima Young1
In 1849, when Captain Wood of the Pandora arrived bringing Buffett home, Nobbs asked for volunteers among the young people to help the Captain up the cliff to the town. Jemima readily volunteered, and was described by Wood as, ‘a stout, good natured girl, who seized my arm and
almost carried me up without the aid of my feet, and this with no apparent effort on her part’. She was among the women who invited Admiral Moresby to visit Pitcairn in 1851. When he arrived, according to Moresby, ‘she was a fine girl, very stout, not pretty, but with an amiable face. She made me her property because, before coming here, I had written her a note. Then she introduced me to all the girls.1‘
Martha Young1
In August 1847 she wrote a series of letters to Captain Charles Hope in behalf of the children of Pitcairn (she was 17 at the time). They sought Captain Hope’s patronage to obtain formal induction of Reverend George Nobbs as Pastor (letter in the Mitchell Library, Sydney.)1 From 28 January 1851, her married name became Buffett.1
