Philip Sydney, 3rd Earl of Leicester was born on 10 January 1618/19.1 He was the son of Robert Sydney, 2nd Earl of Leicester and Lady Dorothy Percy.1 He married Lady Catherine Cecil, daughter of William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury and Lady Catherine Howard, on 19 May 1645 at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London, England.1,3 He died on 6 March 1697/98 at age 79.1 He was buried at St. John the Baptist Churchyard, Penshurst, Kent, England.3
He was also known as Philip Sidney.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Yarmouth, Isle of Wight from March 1640 to April 1640.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Yarmouth, Isle of Wight between November 1640 and 1653.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Louth [Ireland] between 1642 and 1644.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland from 1646 to 1647.1 He held the office of Member of the Council of State in February 1648/49.1 He held the office of Member of the Council of State in February 1649/50.1 He held the office of President of the Council of State from January 1651/52 to February 1651/52.1 He held the office of Chancellor to the Lord Protector in 1653.1 He held the office of Member of the Council of State in July 1653.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Leicester [E., 1618] on 2 November 1677.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount L’Isle [E., 1605] on 2 November 1677.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Sydney of Penshurst, co. Kent [E., 1603] on 2 November 1677.1
