John Keith, 1st Earl of Kintore1 

John Keith, 1st Earl of Kintore was the son of William Keith, 5th Earl Marischal and Lady Mary Erskine.1,3 He married Lady Margaret Hamilton, daughter of Thomas Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Haddington and Lady Jean Gordon, on 24 April 1662.3 He died on 12 April 1715.1
In 1651 he prevented the Regalia of Scotland from falling into the hands of CromwellL by removing them from Dunnottar Castle and hiding them under the floor of Kinneff church for nine years, while pretending that he had delivered them to King Charles II in Paris.1 He held the office of Knight Marischal of Scotland between 1660 and 1714, in consideration of his services in preserving the Scottish Regalia.1 He held the office of Commissioner of the Council for Public Affairs in 1677.1 He was created 1st Earl of Kintore [Scotland] on 26 June 1677.1 He was created 1st Lord Keith of Inverurie and Keith Hall [Scotland] on 26 June 1677.1 He held the office of Treasurer-Depute [Scotland] between 1684 and 1687.1 In 1688 he supported the revolution.1 He held the office of Commissioner of the Privy Seal in 1689.1 In 1694 he obtained a regrant of his 1677 titles with remainder to heirs male of his body.1 He was a Commissioner for Settling the peace of the Highlands in 1702.1 In 1707 he supported the Parliamentary Union with England.1

He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, EnglandG.2 He fought in the First World War between 1916 and 1919.2 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1918 and bar (1919.)1 He fought in the Second World War between 1939 and 1945, where he was mentioned in despatches and was wounded.2 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1940.1 He was awarded the Chevalier, Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1945.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.)1 He gained the rank of Major-General in the Grenadier Guards.1 He succeeded as the 6th Baronet Adair [U.K., 1838] on 9 October 1949.2 He was Lieutenant of the Queen’s Bodyguard, Yeoman of the Guard between 1951 and 1967.2 He was appointed Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) in 1957.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Suffolk.2 He was Colonel of the Grenadier Guards in 1961.2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of County Antrim.2 He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 1967.2 On his death, his baronetcy became extinct.3
