Colonel Sir John Underwood Bateman-Champain1 
Colonel Sir John Underwood Bateman-Champain was born on 22 July 1835 at Gloucester Place, London, England.3 He was the son of Colonel Agnew Champain.4 He married Harriet Sophie Currie, daughter of Sir Frederick Currie, 1st Bt. and Katherine Maria Thompson, on 2 September 1865.1 He died on 1 February 1887 at age 51.1
He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Engineers.5 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.)5 He was given the name of John Underwood Champain at birth.2 He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.2 He was educated at Edinburgh Military Academy, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.2 In 1872 his name was legally changed to John Underwood Bateman-Champain on succeeding to the estate of Halton Park, Lancashire.2
