He matriculated at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, IrelandG, on 17 April 1661.1 He graduated from Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, on 5 August 1677 with a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)1 He fought in the siege of Londonderry in 1689.3 He was Colonel of the 20th Foot between 1689 and 1706.1 He fought in the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, where his horse was shot under him.1 He held the office of Governor of Athlone.1 He fought in the storming of Athlone.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Donegal [Ireland] from 1692 to 1693.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Donegal [Ireland] between 1695 and 1699.1 He gained the rank of Brigadier-General on 30 May 1696.1,4 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Donegal [Ireland] between 1703 and 1713.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1704.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in April 1710.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Strabane in 1713/14.1 He was created 1st Baron Hamilton of Stackallan [Ireland] on 20 October 1715.1 He was created 1st Viscount Boyne, in the province of Leinster [Ireland] on 20 August 1717.1

From after 7 July 1687, her married name became Dillon.2 After her marriage, Frances Hamilton was styled as Viscountess Dillon of Costello-Gallin on 20 June 1694. Henry Dillon, 8th Viscount Dillon of Costello-Gallin1 

Henry Dillon, 8th Viscount Dillon of Costello-Gallin was the son of Theobald Dillon, 7th Viscount Dillon of Costello-Gallin and Mary Talbot.3 He married Frances Hamilton, daughter of Sir George Hamilton, Comte Hamilton and Frances Jenyns, after 7 July 1687.4 He died on 13 January 1713/14.1
He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of County Roscommon in 1689.1 He held the office of Governor of County Galway.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the Regiment of Foot in King James II’s army.1 He succeeded as the 8th Viscount Dillon of Costello-Gallin, co. Mayo [I., 1622] on 20 June 1694.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Westmeath [Ireland], in King James II’s Irish Parliament.1
