Jeffery John Archer Amherst, 5th Earl Amherst of Arracan was born on 13 December 1896.1 He was the son of Hugh Amherst, 4th Earl Amherst of Arracan and Hon. Eleanor Clementina St. Aubyn.1 He died on 4 March 1993 at age 96, unmarried.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches and was wounded.3 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1918.3 He succeeded as the 5th Earl Amherst of Arracan, in the East Indies [U.K., 1826] on 7 March 1927.1 He succeeded as the 5th Viscount Holmesdale, in Kent [U.K., 1826] on 7 March 1927.1 He succeeded as the 6th Baron Amherst of Montreal, Kent [G.B., 1788] on 7 March 1927.1 He was a bond salesman with Harris Forbes, Wall Street.3 He was a pilot and airline general manager between 1929 and 1939.3 He was director of BEA associated companies between 1947 and 1966.3 He wrote the book Wandering Abroad, published 1976, autobiography (ASIN: 0436017202.)3
On his death, his titles became extinct.1
