He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He fought in the Battle of Balaclava.1 He fought in the Battle of Inkerman on 5 November 1854, where he was severely wounded.1 He fought in the Siege of Sebastopol.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1855 in the Coldstream Guards.1 He was styled as Viscount Holmesdale between 1857 and 1886.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for West Kent between 1859 and 1868.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Mid Kent between 1868 and 1880.1 He succeeded as the 4th Baron Amherst of Montreal, Kent [G.B., 1788] on 17 April 1880, in his father’s lifetime.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Viscount Holmesdale, in Kent [U.K., 1826] on 26 March 1886.1 He succeeded as the 3rd Earl Amherst of Arracan, in the East Indies [U.K., 1826] on 26 March 1886.1

(Tory) for Eye between 1799 and 1806.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Eye between January 1807 and April 1807.1 On 9 April 1814 his name was legally changed to James Mann by Royal Licence.1 He succeeded as the 5th Earl Cornwallis [G.B., 1753] on 20 January 1824.1 He succeeded as the 9th Baronet Cornwallis [E., 1627] on 20 January 1824.1 He succeeded as the 9th Baron Cornwallis of Eye, Suffolk [E., 1661] on 20 January 1824.1 He succeeded as the 5th Viscount Brome, of co. Suffolk [G.B., 1753] on 20 January 1824.1 On his death, all of his titles became extinct.1
