He was given the name of John Wilson at birth.1 He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He inherited his father’s Irish estates of Grantstown Manor and Lisduff in Queen’s County.1 He held the office of Sheriff of Queen’s County in 1836.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Queen’s County between 1837 and 1841.1 On 12 February 1842 his name was legally changed to John Fitzpatrick by Royal Licence.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Queen’s County between 1847 and 1852.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] on 28 January 1848.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Queen’s County between 1855 and 1883.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Queen’s County between 1865 and 1869.1 He was created 1st Baron Castletown of Upper Ossory, in the Queen’s County [U.K.] on 10 December 1869.1
