James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton1

James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton was born in 1589.3 He was the son of John Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Hamilton and Margaret Lyon.1,3 He married Lady Anne Cuninghame, daughter of James Cuninghame, 7th Earl of Glencairn and Margaret Campbell, after 30 January 1602/3.4 He died on 2 March 1624/25 at Whitehall, London, EnglandG, from a fever.4 He was buried on 2 September 1625 at Hamilton, ScotlandG.4
He was styled as Lord Aven between 1599 and 1604.3 He succeeded as the 2nd Marquess of Hamilton [S., 1599] on 6 April 1604.3 He was created 1st Lord Aberbrothwick [Scotland] on 5 May 1608.3 He held the office of Sheriff of County Lanark in March 1609.3 He succeeded as the 5th Lord of Hamilton [S., 1445] in March 1609.3 He succeeded as the 4th Earl of Arran [S., 1503] in March 1609.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] on 14 January 1613.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 4 August 1617.3 He was created 1st Earl of Cambridge [England] on 16 June 1619.3 He was created 1st Baron of Innerdale, co. Cumberland [England] on 16 June 1619.3 He held the office of Member of the Council for the plantation of New England in 1620.4 He held the office of Lord High Commissioner to the Parliament [Scotland] in 1621.4 He held the office of Gentleman of the Bedchamber between 1621 and 1624.4 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 20 February 1622/23.4 He held the office of Lord Steward of the Household from 1624 to 1625.4
Cocakyne states that “it is said that the Scots wished him to marry the Princess Elizabeth, 1st daughter of the King. He was (according to Chamberlain) ‘every way held the gallanest gentleman of both the nations.4‘ “

Sir James Hamilton, 5th of Cadzow1 
Note that DNA evidence from the Hamilton DNA project suggests that John was not the biological father of James. Between 1424 and 1426 he was held as a hostage for the ransom of King James I of Scotland.1 He was appointed Knight in 1430.1 He lived at Cadzow, Lanarkshire, ScotlandG.1

Margaret Lyon1 
From 30 September 1566, her married name became Kennedy. After her marriage, Margaret Lyon was styled as Countess of Cassillis. From 30 December 1577, her married name became Hamilton. After her marriage, Margaret Lyon was styled as Marchioness of Hamilton on 17 April 1599.

John Lyon, 7th Lord Glamis1 
He succeeded as the 7th Lord Glamis [S., 1445] on 8 April 1528.1 On 18 July 1537 he was found guilty of treason.2 He was imprisoned and sentenced to be executed, but was respited until he should attain majority, in the interim, he was orderd to be closely confined and his estates declared forfeited. On the death of King James V, he was released and restored to his estates and honours by Parliament, 15 March 1542/3.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1543/44.2

Gilbert Kennedy, 4th Earl of Cassillis1 
He succeeded as the 4th Earl of Cassillis [S., 1509] on 28 November 1558.2 He succeeded as the 6th Lord Kennedy [S., 1458] on 28 November 1558.2 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1562 to Queen Mary.2 He became a Protestant after his marriage.2 He fought in the Battle of Langside on 13 May 1568, for Queen Mary’s side.2 In 1570 he was guilty of horrible cruelty in torturing the commendator of Crossraguel, for the purpose of obtaining a lease of tithes. For this, he was compelled to find security for £2,000.2 In 1571 he joined the King’s party.2

Leslie George Wylde1 
He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Canterbury Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force.1 He fought in the First World War, including on the staff of the chief censor in England.2

Lady Anne Cuninghame1 
Lady Anne Cuninghame was the daughter of James Cuninghame, 7th Earl of Glencairn and Margaret Campbell.3 She married James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton, son of John Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Hamilton and Margaret Lyon, after 30 January 1602/3.3 She died on 16 September 1647.3
After her marriage, Lady Anne Cuninghame was styled as Marchioness of Hamilton after 30 January 1603. From after 30 January 1603, her married name became Hamilton.
