He was educated at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was Attaché to the Legation at Oslo in 1915.1 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1918 in the Grenadier Guards.1 He was 3rd Secretary to Warsaw in 1919.1 He was 2nd Secretary to Paris in 1923.1 He was 2nd Secretary to The Hague in 1924.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Caithness in 1927.1 He was 1st Secretary to Paris in 1928.1 He was 1st Secretary to Athens in 1932.1 He was 1st Secretary to Santiago in 1934.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1942.1 He held the office of Ambassador to Poland between 1945 and 1947.1 He was chairman of Bayer UK between 1968 and 1986.1 He succeeded as the 10th Earl of Portland, co. Dorset [E., 1689] on 13 December 1980.1 He succeeded as the 9th Marquess of Titchfield, co. Southampton [G.B., 1716] on 13 December 1980.1 He succeeded as the 9th Duke of Portland [G.B., 1716] on 13 December 1980.1 He succeeded as the 5th Baron Bolsover, of Bolsover Castle, co. Derby [U.K., 1880] on 13 December 1980.1 He succeeded as the 10th Baron of Cirencester, co. Gloucester [E., 1689] on 13 December 1980.1 He succeeded as the 10th Viscount Woodstock, co. Oxford [E., 1689] on 13 December 1980.1 On his death, his dukedom, marquessate and barony of Bolsover became extinct.1
