     Major John Leslie Portal was born on 13 April 1886.¹ He was the son of Edward Robert Portal and Rose Leslie Napier. He married Violet Eleanor Baldock, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Thomas Stanford Baldock, on 2 April 1921.¹ He died on 20 July 1980 at age 94 at Mendip, Somerset, England.²
     He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.¹ He fought in the First World War.¹ He gained the rank of Major in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.¹ He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.)¹ He served in Waziristan between 1922 and 1923.¹ He fought in the Second World War.¹ He was with the National Defence College (N.D.C.) in 1939.¹ He gained the rank of officer in the 8th Somerset Light Infantry.¹ He gained the rank of officer in the Royal Air Force Regiment.¹

     Violet Eleanor Baldock is the daughter of Maj.-Gen. Thomas Stanford Baldock. She married Major John Leslie Portal, son of Edward Robert Portal and Rose Leslie Napier, on 2 April 1921.¹
     From 2 April 1921, her married name became Portal.¹

     Maj.-Gen. Thomas Stanford Baldock was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)¹

     Lt.-Col. Gervas Edward Portal was born on 18 January 1890.¹ He was the son of Edward Robert Portal and Rose Leslie Napier. He married Iris Mary Butler, daughter of Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler and Anne Gertrude Smith, on 6 January 1927.¹ He died on 3 December 1961 at age 71.¹
     He fought in the First World War.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian Army.¹ He fought in the Second World War.¹

     Iris Mary Butler was the daughter of Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler and Anne Gertrude Smith.¹ She married Lt.-Col. Gervas Edward Portal, son of Edward Robert Portal and Rose Leslie Napier, on 6 January 1927.² She died on 9 November 2002.²
     From 6 January 1927, her married name became Portal.² She wrote the book The Eldest Brother: the Marquess Wellesley 1760-1842, published 1973.¹

     Sir Montagu Sherard Dawes Butler was the son of Spencer Percival Butler.² He married Anne Gertrude Smith, daughter of George Smith and Janet Colquhoun Adam, on 12 October 1901.³ He died on 7 November 1952.³
     He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.)⁴ He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Star of India (K.C.S.I.)⁴ He was with the Indian Civil Service.³ He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of the Isle of Man.³ He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)⁴ He was appointed Companion, Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.)⁴ He was appointed Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.)⁴

     Jane Gillian Portal was born on 11 December 1929.¹ She was the daughter of Lt.-Col. Gervas Edward Portal and Iris Mary Butler. She married, firstly, Gavin Bramhall Welby, son of Bramhall James Welby, on 23 April 1955.¹ She and Gavin Bramhall Welby were divorced in 1959.¹ She married, secondly, Charles Cutherbert Powell Williams, Baron Williams of Elvel, son of Dr. Norman Powell Williams and Muriel de Lérisson Cazenove, in 1975.¹ She died on 15 July 2023 at age 93.²
     From 23 April 1955, her married name became Welby.¹ From 1975, her married name became Williams.¹ After her marriage, Jane Gillian Portal was styled as Baroness Williams of Elvel on 22 May 1985.

     Gavin Bramhall Welby was born on 28 November 1914.¹ He was the son of Bramhall James Welby. He married Jane Gillian Portal, daughter of Lt.-Col. Gervas Edward Portal and Iris Mary Butler, on 23 April 1955.² He and Jane Gillian Portal were divorced in 1959.² He died in 1977 at Kensington, London, England.¹
     He was given the name of Bernard Weiler at birth.³

     Bramhall James Welby lived at South Africa.¹

     Rt. Rev. Justin Portal Welby was born on 6 January 1956.² He is the son of Sir Anthony Arthur Duncan Montague Browne and Jane Gillian Portal.³ He married Caroline E. Eaton in 1979 at Kensington, London, England.^2,4
     He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.² He was educated at Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.² He was with Elf Acquitaine.² He was treasurer of Enterprise Oil plc between 1984 and 1987.² He was educated at Durham Theological College, Durham, County Durham, England.² He was the Curate between 1992 and 1996 at Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England.² He was the Vicar in 1996 at Southam, Warwickshire, England.⁴ He held the office of Bishop of Durham between 2011 and 2012.⁴ He was announced as the new Archbishop of Canterbury in November 2012.⁴
