He was educated at Clifton College, Clifton, Bristol, England.2 He gained the rank of officer in 1893 in the Queen’s Westminster Rifle Volunteers.2 He was educated at Merton College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.2 He fought in the Boer War in 1900, where he was mentioned in dispatches.2 He gained the rank of Brigade Signaling Officer in the 21st Infantry Brigade.2 He was awarded the Territorial Decoration (T.D.)2 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches.2 He gained the rank of officer in the Queen’s Westminster Rifles.2 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1916.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1919.2 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1926.2 He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Corps of Signals (TA.)2
