Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Shannon was born on 30 January 1727/28.3 He was the son of Henry Boyle, 1st Earl of Shannon and Lady Henrietta Boyle.4,3 He married Catharine Ponsonby, daughter of Rt. Hon. John Ponsonby and Lady Elizabeth Cavendish, on 15 December 1763.5 He died on 20 May 1807 at age 79.3
He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dungarvin [Ireland] between 1749 and 1760.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for County Cork [Ireland] between 1761 and 1764.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] between 1763 and 1770.3 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron of Castle Martyr, co. Cork [I., 1756] on 28 December 1764.3 He succeeded as the 2nd Viscount Boyle of Bandon, co. Cork [I., 1756] on 28 December 1764.3 He succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Shannon [I., 1756] on 28 December 1764.3 He held the office of Master General of Ordnance [Ireland] between 1766 and 1770.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in 1774.3 He was Muster Master and Clerk Cheque Armies in Ireland between 1774 and 1781.3 He held the office of Vice-Treasurer of Ireland between 1781 and 1789.3 He was appointed Knight, Order of St. Patrick (K.P.) in 1783.3 He was created 1st Baron Carleton, of Carleton, co. York [Great Britain] on 6 August 1786.4

Catharine Ponsonby1 
From 15 December 1763, her married name became Boyle.2 After her marriage, Catharine Ponsonby was styled as Countess of Shannon on 28 December 1764.
