Robert Balfour, 5th Lord Balfour of Burleigh1
On 4 August 1709 he was tried for the murder of Henry Stenhouse, schoolmaster of Inverkeithing, who married Janet Thompson (his sister’s governess), to whom he was attached.1 On 29 November 1709 he was sentinced to be beheaded but escaped by changing clothes with his sister.1 He succeeded as the 5th Lord Balfour of Burleigh, co. Kinross [S., 1607] in July 1713.1 In 1715 he took part in the Uprising of 1715.1 On 13 November 1715 he was attainted, with his lands and title forfeited, as he did not surrender.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.2
