     Major John Finlay was born on 17 October 1833.¹ He was the son of John Finlay.¹ He married Mary Marcella Taylor on 13 January 1863 at Christ Chapel, Bayswater, London, England.¹
     He gained the rank of Ensign on 14 February 1851 in the 78th Highlanders.¹ He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 22 December 1854.¹ He fought in the Indian Mutiny in 1857.¹ He gained the rank of Captain on 10 September 1858 in the 21st Foot.¹ He gained the rank of Captain on 4 November 1859 in the 78th Highlanders.¹ He gained the rank of Brevet Major on 5 July 1872.¹ He lived at Woodhay, Windlesham, Surrey, England.¹ He retired from the military on 28 July 1873.¹
