He was educated at Geelong Grammer School, Geelong, Victoria, AustraliaG.1 He was commissioned in 1931, in the service of the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars.1 He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1933 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was served with Transjordan Frontier Force (and was mentioned in despatches twice) between 1937 and 1939.1 He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1938.1 He fought in the Second World War in 1939, he was mentioned in despatches five times and was wounded three times.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1941.1 He was awarded the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1942 and bar (1945.)1 He was of the 4th Para Brigade in 1942.1 He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1945 with a Bachelor of Literature (B.Litt.)1 He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1945 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was Commandant of the Royal Military College of Science between 1948 and 1961.1 He was DQMG of the BAOR in 1952.1 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1953.1 He was of the 20th Armoured Brigade in 1954.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1955.1 He was General Officer Commanding of the 7th Armoured Division between 1956 and 1958.1 He was GOC-in-Chief of the Nothern Ireland between 1961 and 1962.1 He was Colonel Commandant of the Royal Electricial and Mechanical Engineers between 1961 and 1966.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1962.1 He was Deputy Chief of Imperial General Staff between 1963 and 1964.1 He was Deputy Chief of General Staff, Ministry of Defence between 1964 and 1966.1 He was Commander-in-Chief of the BAOR between 1966 and 1968.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1967.1 He was the Principal between 1968 and 1975 at King’s College London, London, England.1 He lived at Silverdale Forest, Racolpa, County Tyrone, Ireland.1 He lived in 1976 at Loughros, Ardara, County Donegal, Ireland.1 He wrote the book The Third World War: the untold story, published 1982.4
