     He was commissioned on 27 October 1784 with the rank of Cornet, in the service of the 1st Dragoon Guards.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1786.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1793.2 He fought in the Capture of the Cape of Good Hope in 1796.2 He gained the rank of Major on 19 April 1796 in the 27th Light Dragoons.2 He fought in the Indian Campaigns between 1803 and 1804.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 22 June 1809 in the 24th Dragoons.2 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1811.2 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1814.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1830.2
