He was commissioned on 1 January 1928 with the rank of Cadet, in the service of the Royal Navy.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 16 April 1934.1 He fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches.2 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.) in 1943.2 He gained the rank of Commander on 31 December 1947.1 He gained the rank of Captain on 30 June 1953.1 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1963.2
