He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 44th Foot.1 He gained the rank of Ensign in the 25th Foot.1 He was styled as Master of Torphichen. He fought in the Battle of Prestonpans on 21 September 1745, where he was wounded and taken prisoner by Jacobites.1
