G/Capt. Peter Woolridge Townsend was born on 22 November 1914 at Rangoon, Burma.3 He was the son of Lt.-Col. Edward Copleston Townsend.2 He married, firstly, Cecil Rosemary Pawle, daughter of Brigadier Hanbury Pawle and Mary Cecil Hughes-Hallett, on 17 July 1941.1,4 He and Cecil Rosemary Pawle were divorced in December 1952.5,6 He married, secondly, Marie-Luce Jamagne in 1959.3 He died on 19 June 1995 at age 80 at Saint-Leger-en-Yvelines, France.3
He was educated between 1928 and 1932 at Haileybury College, Haileybury, Hertfordshire, England.2 He fought in the Second World War.7 He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.) in 1940 and bar.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1941.1 He held the office of Equerry to HM King George VI between 1944 and 1952.3 He was appointed Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) in 1947.1 He was Deputy Master, HM Household between 1950 and 1952.3 He held the office of Equerry and Controller to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother between 1952 and 1953.3 He gained the rank of Group Captain in 1953 in the Royal Air Force.2 He was Air Attache, Brussels between 1953 and 1956.3 He wrote the book Time and Change: an autobiography, published 1978 (ASIN: B000J0KVZU.)7
