He succeeded as the 7th Baronet Stuart, of Hartley Mauduit, co. Southampton [E., 1660] on 21 August 1891.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the 5th Dragoon Guards.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Suffolk Imperial Yeomanry.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1901, where he was mentioned in dispatches.1 He gained the rank of Major and DAAG in the Imperial Yeomanry.1 He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 2nd Company, London Yeomanry between 1909 and 1913.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches.1 He was commander of the 2nd Entrenching Battalion, BEF between 1916 and 1917.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in 1918.1
