He was educated at Hall Place School, Bexley, Kent, EnglandG.1 He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, IrelandG.1 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1852 entitled to practise as a Barrister-at-Law.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for King’s Lynn between 1868 and 1886.1 He held the office of Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs between 1874 and 1880.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1880.1 He held the office of Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs between 1885 and 1886.1 He held the office of Governor of Madras between 1886 and 1890.1 He was created 1st Baron Connemara, of Connemara, co. Galway [U.K.] on 12 May 1887.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Commander, Order of the Indian Empire (G.C.I.E.) on 21 June 1887.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of East Lothian.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for East Lothian.2 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.3

He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Lancashire.2 He was with the Chief Engineer’s staff during the construction of Forth Bridge.2 He was president of the Land Agent’s Society between 1927 and 1928.2 He succeeded as the 8th Viscount Mayo of Monycrower, co. Mayo [I., 1781] on 31 December 1927.1 He succeeded as the 8th Baron Naas of Naas, co. Kildare [I., 1776] on 31 December 1927.1 He succeeded as the 8th Earl of the County of Mayo [I., 1785] on 31 December 1927.1 He was Resident Engineer of the Manchester Ship Canal Construction Company.2 He gained the rank of Major in the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Imperial Yeomanry.2 He was appointed Fellow, Land Agents’ Society (F.L.A.S.)2 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Photographic Society (F.R.P.S.)2 He was president of College of Estate Management between 1937 and 1938.2
