He was educated at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, England.2 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.2 He fought in the Nile Expedition between 1884 and 1885.2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Nairn in 1890.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) in 1899.2 He fought in the Boer War between 1901 and 1902.2 He was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1st Battalion, Black Watch.2 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches four times.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1916.2 He was awarded the Officer French Ordre du Merite Agricole in 1917.2
