He was also known as James Rivett.1 He was member of the Bombay Government Council.1 He was chairman of the Honourable East India Company.1 In 1801 his name was legally changed to James Rivett-Carnac by royal licence under terms of will of his brother-in-law General John Carnac.1

He was with the Indian Civil Service between 1858 and 1894.1 He was awarded the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Officers’ Decoration (V.D.)1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.) in 1878.1 He gained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the Ghazipur Light Horse and Rifle Volunteers.1 He was awarded the Grand Cross, Order of the Lion and Sun of Persia.1 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.)1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Astronomical Society (F.R.A.S.)1 He was awarded the Knight Grand Cross, North Star of Sweden.1 He held the office of Aide-de-Camp to HM Queen Victoria in 1891.1
