Marshal of the RAF Cyril Louis Norton Newall, 1st Baron Newall was born on 15 February 1886.1 He was the son of Lt.-Col. William Potter Newall.2 He married, firstly, Mary Dulcie Weddell on 18 January 1922.1 He married, secondly, Olive Tennyson Foster, daughter of Horace Tennyson Foster, on 18 April 1925.1 He died on 30 November 1963 at age 77.1
He was educated at Bedford School, Bedford, Bedfordshire, England.1 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.1 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in 1905 in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment.1 He fought in the Zakka Khel Expedition in 1908.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches three times.1 He gained the rank of officer in 1914 in the Royal Flying Corps.1 He was awarded the Albert Medal (A.M.) in 1916 for putting out a fire in an airfield bomb store.1 He gained the rank of Brevet Major.1 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1919.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1919.1 He was Deputy Director of Personnel, Air Ministry between 1919 and 1922.1 He was Air Aide-de-Camp to HM King George V between 1923 and 1924.1 He was Deputy Chief of Air Staff between 1925 and 1931.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1929.1 He gained the rank of Air Vice Marshal in 1930.1 He was Air Officer Commanding of the RAF Middle East between 1931 and 1934.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1935.1 He gained the rank of Air Marshal in 1935.1 He gained the rank of Air Chief Marshal in 1937.1 He was Chief of Air Staff between 1937 and 1940.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1938.1 He gained the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force in 1940.1 He was awarded the Order of Merit (O.M.) in 1940.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1940.1 He held the office of Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief of New Zealand between 1941 and 1946.1 He was created 1st Baron Newall, of Clifton-upon-Dunsmoor, co. Warwick [U.K.] on 18 July 1946.1
