He was given the name of John Amory at birth.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Devon.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Tiverton between 1868 and 1885.2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Devon.2 He gained the rank of Major in the 1st Devon Royal Volunteers.2 On 28 February 1874 his name was legally changed to John Heathcoat-Amory by Royal Licence.2 He was created 1st Baronet Heathcoat-Amory [U.K.] on 21 March 1874.2
