On 16 January 1663 he was served heir to his father.1 On 11 September 1680 he obtained a Crown charter erecting his whole lands into a free barony, called the Barony of Strathlachlan, and appointing the manor place of Castle Lachlan, in Strathlachlan, near Strachur, to be the principal messuage of teh barony.1
