Argyll [N.S., 1631] on 2 November 1818.¹ He gained the rank of General in 1837.¹ He gained the rank of Colonel in 1841 in the 54th Foot.¹

     Sir John Maclean, 1st Bt. was born in 1604 at Duart Castle, Mull, Argyllshire, Scotland.² He was the son of Hector ‘Og’ Maclean, 11th of Duart and Morvern and Isabelle Acheson.³ He married, thirdly, Anna Thompson.² He married, firstly, Anna Gubbertz in 1629 at Gotheburg, Sweden.² He married, secondly, Lilian Hamilton on 30 December 1655.² He died on 7 July 1666.²
     He was also known as John Makeléer.² He was ancestor of the extinct Counts Maclean of Sweden.¹ He was created 1st Baronet Maclean [England] in May 1649.²
