John Macdonald, 8th of Glenaladale was the son of Alexander Macdonald, 7th of Glenaladale and Margaret Macdonell.2 He married, secondly, Catherine Macdonald, daughter of Ranald Macdonald, 4th of Geridhoil and Fora Macdonell.2 He married, firstly, Isabella Gordon, daughter of unknown Gordon of Wardhouse.1 He died in 1811.1
He was a factor to Clanranald.1 He purchased land in St. John’s Island, Canada in 1771.1 He sold Glenaladale in 1773 to Alexander Macdonald, 9th of Glenaladale.1 He fought in the American War of Independence.2 He gained the rank of Captain in the 84th (Royal Highland Emigrant) Regiment, which he had raised.2
