Sir James Fitzjames Stephen, 1st Bt. was born on 3 March 1829 at Kensington, London, England.1 He was the son of Sir James Stephen and Jane Catherine Venn.1 He married Mary Richenda Cunningham, daughter of Reverend John William Cunningham and Mary Calvert, on 19 April 1855.1 He died on 11 March 1894 at age 65 at Red House Park, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.1 He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1854 entitled to practise as a barrister-at-law.3 He held the office of Recorder of Newark-on-Trent between 1859 and 1869.3 He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) in 1868.3 He was legal member of the council in India between 1869 and 1872.1 He was professor of common law between 1875 and 1879 at Inns of Court, London, England.3 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Star of India (K.C.S.I.) in 1877.1 He held the office of Judge of the High Court of Judicature between 1879 and 1891.1,3 He was created 1st Baronet Stephen, of de Vere Gardens, London [U.K.] on 2 July 1891.3 He was educated at King’s College London, London, England.1
