He was educated at Oundle School, Oundle, Northamptonshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was a master between 1926 and 1939 at Achimota College, Achimota, Gold Coast.1 He was the headmaster between 1939 and 1947 at King’s College, Budo, Uganda.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Hemingford, of Watford, co. Herts [U.K., 1943] on 10 December 1947.1 He was the Rector between 1948 and 1951 at Achimota Training College, Achimota, Gold Coast.1 He was chairman of the Africa Bureau between 1952 and 1963.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Huntingdonshire in 1960.1 He held the office of Member of the Huntingdonshire County Council between 1961 and 1965.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire and Peterborough between 1968 and 1982.1
