Rt. Hon. Sir George Grey was born posthumously on 14 April 1812 at Lisbon, PortugalG.1 He was the son of Lt.-Col. George Grey and Elizabeth Anne Vignoles.1 He married Eliza Lucy Spencer, daughter of Admiral Sir Richard Spencer, on 2 November 1839.1 He died on 19 September 1898 at age 86 at London, EnglandG.3 He was buried at St. Paul’s Cathedral, The City, London, EnglandG.1
He was educated at Royal Grammar School, Guildford, Surrey, EnglandG.2 He was educated between 1826 and 1830 at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, EnglandG.3 He was commissioned in 1830 with the rank of Ensign, in the service of the 83rd Foot Regiment.3 He was in exploration expeditions in Western Australia between 1837 and 1839.3 He held the office of Governor of South Africa between 1840 and 1845.1 He held the office of Governor-General of New Zealand between 1845 and 1853.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1848.1 He held the office of Governor of the Cape Colony between 1853 and 1860.1 He held the office of Governor-General of New Zealand between 1860 and 1868.1 He was Superintendent of Auckland Province in 1874.4 He held the office of Member of the House of Representatives (M.H.R.) [New Zealand] between 1875 and 1879.1 He held the office of Premier of New Zealand between 1877 and 1879.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.)4 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)4 He held the office of Member of the House of Representatives (M.H.R.) [New Zealand] between 1893 and 1895.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1894.4
