     Charles Cheyne, 1st Viscount Newhaven was born in October 1625.1 He was the son of Francis Chiene of Cogenho and Anne Fleetwood.2 He married Lady Jane Cavendish, daughter of William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Elizabeth Basset, in 1654.1 He married, secondly, Laetitia Isabella Smythe, daughter of Sir John Smythe and Isabel Rich, after 1686.3 He died on 30 June 1698 at age 72.1
     He was also known as Charles Chiene.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Agmondisham in 1660.2 He was created 1st Viscount Newhaven [Scotland] on 17 May 1681. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Newport, Cornwall in 1696.2
