     He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Linlithgowshire between 1847 and 1860.1 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of Prince Edward’s Island between 1859 and 1867.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.)1 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of St. Vincent
between 1874 and 1880.1
