     Margaret Elizabeth Grierson also went by the nick-name of ‘The Elect Lady’.² From 1779, her married name became Middleton.¹

     Reverend Erasmus Middleton was born on 25 April 1739 at Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England^G.² He was the son of Erasmus Middleton and Ann Wilson.² He was baptised on 30 May 1739 at Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England^G.² He married Margaret Elizabeth Grierson, daughter of Sir Gilbert Grierson of Lag, 4th Bt. and Elizabeth Maitland, in 1779 at Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland^G.¹ He died on 25 April 1805 at age 66 at Turvey, Bedfordshire, England^G.²
     He was educated at Kingswood School, Kingswood, Bristol, England^G.² He matriculated at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G, on 4 June 1767.² On 11 March 1768 he was expelled from Oxford for publically praying and preaching at Methodist meetings.² He graduated from King’s College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England^G, with a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.)² He was editor of the Gospel Magazine.² He wrote the book Biographia Evangelica, published between 1779 and 1786.² He was the Rector in 1804 at Turvey, Bedfordshire, England^G.² He wrote the book Versions and Imitations of Psalms, published 1806.² He wrote the book Life of Luther, published 1807.²

     Jane Grierson is the daughter of Sir Gilbert Grierson of Lag, 4th Bt. and Elizabeth Maitland.¹ She married Hugh Maxwell, son of Hugh Maxwell, 3rd of Dalswinton and Jane Douglas.¹
     Her married name became Maxwell.¹

     Hugh Maxwell is the son of Hugh Maxwell, 3rd of Dalswinton and Jane Douglas.² He married Jane Grierson, daughter of Sir Gilbert Grierson of Lag, 4th Bt. and Elizabeth Maitland.¹
     He also had four daughters.² He lived at Dalswinton, Kirkmahor, Nithsdale, Scotland^G.^1,2

     Harriet Maxwell was the daughter of Hugh Maxwell and Jane Grierson.^3,2,1 She married John Symons on 7 June 1819.^1,2 She died on 12 January 1864 at St. Colme Street, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G.²
     From 7 June 1819, her married name became Symons.¹
