He was educated at Royal Navy School, New Cross.1 He was with the Pioneer Column for Mashonaland in 1890.1 He fought in the First Matabele War in 1893, as galloper and scout.1 He was Adjutant of the Bulawayo Field Force in Matabele Rebellion in 1896.1 He was Commandant of the Police depot at Salisbury, Rhodesia in 1898.1 He was established Police post North of the Zambesi in 1899.1 He fought in the Boer War between 1901 and 1902.1 He was Commandant of the North Rhodesian Police in 1906.1 He was Administrator of Northern Rhodesia between 1907 and 1910.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1910.1 He was Commandant of Police Forces, North-East and North-West Rhodesia in 1911.1 He retired from the military in 1912, with the rank of Colonel, late of the British South African Police.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 5th Wiltshire Regiment.1
